Basalt is a mafic (dark) igneous, extrusive volcanic rock. As such, basalt may be vesicular (containing small cavities) and brecciated (having angular fragments). It is typically hard, tough and dense.

Relation to Mining:
Decorative basalt is occasionally handpicked from mining operations, and generally quarried cut and polished into tiles, slabs or other decorative forms.

Uses:
Basalt is used as a crushed stone, decorative stone, dimension stone, and in insulation.
How is basalt used?
Basalt is most commonly used in an aggregate for construction projects. It is often crushed and used to create road bases, in asphalt paving, as a filler stone or in a concrete aggregate mix. It’s also used as a filter stone for drainage or railway projects.
Basalt is also used for tiles and building veneer due to its strength, durability and appealing colour tones. The rock features in our Architectural Concrete paver range and is available in a large selection of sizes. Its deep blue-grey colour is proving popular in architectural projects and the two textured finishes of etched or shot vary the appearance. Etched creates a smooth look and feel, whereas shot enhances the natural texture of the rock.
Basalt tiles are often used for flooring, walling cladding, worktops and to clad fireplaces. The dust of the rock is also used amongst farmers as a fertiliser. Due to its mineral content, it is found to promote the growth of plants while inhibiting the spread of unwanted weeds.

Black Rock Mine was founded in the late 1980's and went into production in the early 2000's. Unfortunately with the economy failing the mine shut down. Now years later we have received the opportunity to reopen this mine. Black Rock mine is now producing the amazing Basalt materials again.
